One day Jesus was feeling a bit sad, so he walked to a quiet place with the apostles.
By this time Jesus was getting well known, so thousands of people followed him to the quiet place.
Soon it wasn't very quiet anymore. Everyone was talking, and getting excited, and asking questions. The people were like sheep, making a fuss of their shepherd.
When Jesus had finished talking it was getting late. One of the apostles said, 'I'm staving, and so is everyone else. Shall we go into town for something to eat?'
Jesus thought for a moment. 'No, we'll eat here. How much food has everyone got?'
The apostles asked all the people what they had. No one had anything, except one small boy who had five loaves of bread and two small fishes.
That won't go very far,' one of the apostles said. 'That will only feed two of us.' Jesus looked up, 'We'll feed everyone here, all five thousand of them.'
The apostles looked amazed. 'You must be joking,' they said. 'They'll only get half a mouthful each.'
'Wait and see,' said Jesus, knowing that God would help out.
None of the apostles quite knew what happened next. Suddenly there was enough bread and fish for everyone. In fact, there was so much that they collected twelve baskets of leftovers.
When everyone realised what had happened, they prayed with Jesus, thanking God for their lovely meal.
After all the people had gone home, Jesus sent the apostles ahead of him to the boat they kept at the lake. He sat by himself and did some thinking. When it was just beginning to get dark, he strolled down to the shore and, seeing his apostles in their boat, decided to walk out to them. Now anyone else who tries to walk on water soon sinks, but Jesus was different. He actually walked on top of the water, all the way to the boat.
Well, as you have probably guessed, the apostles were rather shocked to see a lone figure approaching out of the mist towards them.
They didn't realise it was Jesus at first, and they all cried, 'It's a nasty spirit, we'll all be drowned!' But Jesus, who was completely dry, said, 'It's only me, lads. Don't worry.'
The apostles calmed down. 'Jesus, you did give us a shock - how did you do that?'
Jesus smiled his God's-helping-me smile, and said, 'It's simple, all you need is a bit of faith. Peter, walk over to me.'
Peter looked a little apprehensive, but since Jesus said it, he thought he would be all right. He stepped out of the boat, and found he could actually walk on the water!
He grinned a rather watery grin at Jesus, and walked a few steps further. Just at that moment, Peter thought, 'This is ridiculous, how can I be walking on water? It's impossible.'
Well, that thought was the same as losing faith, so you know what happened? Peter started sinking. He was just about up to his knees when Jesus held out his hand and gently lifted him up again.
'You must have faith, Peter,' he said. 'Everyone sinks without faith.'
The apostles knew what Jesus meant by that. Have faith and you'll be all right. Simple, isn't it?
